About Translation

Better than the Original

The cover of a translation of Beowulf in modern English. Of course better needs to be qualified. The original Beowulf manuscript on the right is certainly better than its translation, but I don't understand the original Old English.

I need a translation to understand what it says.

And in this respect, a translation is better than the original document, because it conveys your message in a form that can be understood by those for whom it is intended.

The Beowulf The text reads: "LO, praise of the prowess of people-kings of spear-armed Danes, in days long sped, we have heard, and what honor the athelings won! Oft Scyld the Scefing from squadroned foes, from many a tribe, the mead-bench tore, awing the earls."
