An Ethical Stance
I take an ethical approach to the business. Leaving aside humourous puns like "No animals were harmed during the creation of this website", I believe in integrity, honesty and reliability. I take the repercussions of my work seriously.
I have no hesitation in admitting that being able to take this stance places me firmly in a privileged minority.
For several years I was actively involved and worked for an international Charity organization: many of the people I came in contact with did not have the liberty and the choices we take for granted. We can choose to drink FairTrade tea, take our paper and our glass to the recycle bin, give donations to Send A Cow, Oxfam or TearFund, use renewable energy, support Jubilee 2000 or Make Poverty History, eat organics, and feel smug to the core to "have done our bit". Yet, this is a privilege we share with a frightening small minority in the world, and we must be aware of it. These actions are good, but the story must not end there.
You need to have convictions or you can't live. And you need to practice your convictions or you cannot live with yourself.
An ethical approach to business goes much further than token gestures. It has ramifications that extend well into our private life. I am not able to separate my professional life from my beliefs.
For this reason I will not translate material which advocates violence and abuse, exploitation of the poor and the vulnerable, pornography, or that is at odds with the basic tenets of respect and care for all human beings and the earth.
Moreover, I will endeavour to always treat you, my clients, with integrity, correctly, honestly, honourably and sincerely. If I promise, I will do all that I can to fulfill my promise, and will let you know as soon as possible if real force majoure prevents me.
Words you can rely on does not only refer to my translations. It is the underlying essence of my relation with my clients: Honest, straightforward and trustworthy.
